How to Deal With the Terror of Nuclear Terrorism

3-day workshop, US$ 1,095

scared manWhat is Nuclear Terrorism?
  1. An attack on a nuclear power plant, maybe using an airliner...

  2. Explosion of a dirty bomb in your community...

  3. Explosion of a renegade nuclear weapon in your city...

Many people are terrified by the thought that such an attack could occur!

This workshop provides, homeland security, first responders, fire, police, and medical personnel, specialists in radiation safety, and government response coordinators with communication tools for effectively dealing with fears of nuclear terrorism. This workshop is based on over 25 years of experience in dealing with nuclear incidents and studies on the psychological basis of fears. This workshop will show why conventional approaches to public communications do not work and what is needed for successful communications during a nuclear incident. Ten tools for effective radiation risk communication will be provided.

The workshop will provide an analysis of each participant's natural communication style and how this style relates to public communication preferences. We will evaluate the communication strengths and weaknesses of each participant with the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. We will practice the skill called Active Listening for hearing and responding to people's fears of radiation. We will also explore the basis of fears and how to respond to people's perceptions and images of consequences to radiation exposure. Participants will receive a 300 plus page manual of communication tools and also a book of Ray's monthly columns "Communication Insights" published in the Health Physics Society's Newsletter for over 12 years.

The instructor for this workshop is Ray Johnson, Certified Health Physicist, with over 40 years of experience in radiation safety. Ray is also a trained psychological counselor and has presented over 100 workshops on radiation risk communications over the past 20 years. Ray was in charge of the EPA's Radiation Surveillance Branch for 15 years with responsibilities for radiation emergencies and monitoring all sources of radiation in the US. Ray is a Past President of the Health Physics Society and has authored over 500 publications and presentations on radiation safety and risk communications.
