Medical Radiation Safety Officer

5-day course, US$ 1,895
available LSC Option, US$ 200 additional
with DOT Certification Option, US$ 200 additional

Are you the RSO, assistant RSO, Authorized User, or Physicist responsible for those working with radioactive materials and radiation producing machines in your hospital?

Do you manage or work with radioactive materials in a medical setting?

Do you want to be informed of new technology and procedures for medical aspects of radiation safety?

Are you up to date on the regulations for medical use of radioactive material?

PET ScannerThe use of radiation in the medical field is continuously evolving. To help keep you current with new techniques and procedures, we now offer this course for those managing or working with radioactive material in a medical environment.

This 5-day course is filled with a variety of helpful information starting with a review of the responsibilities for managing radiation safety in a hospital. We spend minimal time reviewing atomic structure and radioactivity before investigating the pertinent regulations to assist you in performing your job. We discuss real-world applications and suggestions for external and internal radiation protection are offered in detail. The remaining days are packed with practical information including discussions of real world experiences on a variety of topics relevant to medical radiation safety.

For those individuals looking for refresher training on medical radiation safety, this course is designed with you in mind.

Course Content

The course will contain information on: radiation fundamentals, health effects, medical licensing, regulations, compliance, internal and external protection, X-ray safety, fluoroscopy safety, managing nuclear medicine and PET/CT programs, brachytherapy, diagnostic and therapeutic therapies, radiation safety surveys, inspection and audits, human use and radiation safety committees, research/blood bank irradiators, troubleshooting of radiation safety programs, emergency response, radioactive and mixed waste management, bioassay programs, ALARA programs, DOT shipping requirements, safety program implementation, and instruments.

Practical Knowledge

This is not a course about theory. We emphasize practical knowledge for implementing a good radiation safety program at a reasonable cost and how to assure successful radiation safety inspections. Each student will receive extensive reference materials including a specially designed Medical Radiation Safety Manual that includes relevant Federal regulations and selected set of Regulatory Guides as well as a certificate of course completion.

Liquid Scintillation Counting Option

Students selecting this option (additional $200 fee required) will complete an additional four hours of course work on the fundamentals of liquid scintillation counting (LSC). The objective of this class is to provide students with a basic understanding of the principles of liquid scintillation counting for analysis of surface swipes, biomedical, environmental, waste and other types of samples. This module is conducted at the end of the course on Friday afternoon.

DOT HAZMAT Certification Option

Students selecting this option (additional $200 fee required) will complete an additional four hours of course work on shipping and receiving of radioactive materials. This class is designed to train workers in the requirements of the DOT as specified by 49 CFR 172 Subpart H and the NRC as specified by 10 CFR 71.5 and 10 CFR 20.1906. This module is conducted at the end of the regular RSO course on Friday afternoon and will conclude with an examination. Students who successfully complete the exam will receive an additional certificate documenting this training.
