Low Level Radioactive & Mixed Waste Management

3-day course, US$ 1,095

This course should be taken by all personnel involved with the generation, consolidation, storage, and preparation for shipment of low-level radioactive waste or mixed radioactive hazardous waste, as well as supervisors and auditors with responsibilities for waste generation or shipment.

Topics will include the regulatory classification requirements for low-level radioactive waste, the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act and state compact updates, current status and availability regarding commercially available disposal sites, waste sites’ acceptance criteria, waste broker services, and mixed waste disposal options. Course participants will learn how to characterize, classify, package, prepare for shipment, label, and manifest waste shipments. EPA requirements for implementing the conditional exemption for storage, transportation and disposal of mixed wastes will be discussed as well as NRC/EPA guidance on testing of mixed wastes.

This course begins with radioactive materials transportation training (DOT & NRC Requirements for Shipping and Receiving Radioactive Materials). If students have recently completed training in this area, they may choose to attend the third day only. Please call 1-800-871-7930 to discuss this option.

Students will receive a special 1,100+ page manual including all training materials, pertinent regulations and regulatory guides, as well as forms and checklists to assure that all DOT requirements are met for employer certification.

The primary instructor is Mr. Sean Austin, a Certified Health Physicist with an M.S. in Radiation Science and six years in charge of Radioactive Waste Management and Shipping and Receiving Radioactive Materials at the Radiation Safety Branch, National Institutes of Health. Other instructors include Dr. Alan Fellman, a Certified Health Physicist with a PhD in radiation science/environmental science and Ray Johnson, a Certified Health Physicist, and Professional Engineer.
