Radiation Safety for Homeland Security and Emergency Responders

2-day course, US$ 795

Transport SignWhat are your risks when responding to a radiation accident?

How do you protect yourself from radiation at the scene?

This 2-day course is designed for homeland security and emergency (HAZMAT) responders, such as Security Staff, HPs, RSOs, industrial hygienists, firemen, policemen, rescue workers, ambulance drivers, emergency medical staff, doctors, nurses, or other medical personnel who may be involved in emergencies with potential for radiation exposures. The first day of this class will include a detailed review of the fundamentals of radiation safety. This is the same class presented to new radiation workers and does not require previous training in math or sciences.

Attendees will gain practical understanding for effective emergency response based on demonstrations and practice scenarios involving radioactive materials. The class will review the basis for radiation risk perceptions, understanding radiation, biological effects of radiation, radiation protection regulations, radiation measurements, exposure and contamination control, decontamination, and practical examples of responses to radiation incidents.

Each attendee will receive an extensive training manual on Radiation Safety for Homeland Security and Emergency Responders. The primary instructors are Ray Johnson, CHP; Dr. Alan Fellman, CHP; and Sean Austin, CHP. Credits are approved by the ABHP and the ABIH.

Topics Covered During Each Session Include

  • How Images Drive our Perceptions
  • Understanding Radiation
  • Radiation Health Concerns
  • Radiation Protection Regulations
  • Measuring Radiation
  • Good Radiation Safety Practices
