Emergency Response

The Radiation Safety Academy has served as emergency responders for several of our clients and is available to assist you. Our staff has been instrumental in helping clients respond to spills of radioactive liquids, lost radioactive materials, radioactive materials discovered in public areas, improper disposal of radioactive materials, and incidents involving contamination of workers. Our staff of health physicists has assisted in surveys of contaminated personnel, facilities, and equipment to assure proper action is taken to remediate the incident.

We provide normal work hours and after-hours emergency response services. We have an 24-hour emergency response phone number which you may utilize to request consultation and on-site emergency response services. Our staff is prepared to respond with personal protective equipment (gloves, booties, coveralls, sleevecovers, etc.) to assist in the cleanup. We maintain an inventory of calibrated instruments, including Geiger-Mueller detectors, alpha/beta/gamma scintillator detectors, gas proportional detectors, ion chambers, and microR/microrem meters to investigate situations when determination of low-levels of radiation and radioactivity are required.

We will collect a variety of samples for radioanalysis. Our licensed laboratory is available for the analysis of samples by liquid scintillation counting and gamma counting of your samples. We also maintain on-going partnerships with other licensed laboratories if a more thorough radioanalysis or chemical analysis is required.

The Academy can provide emergency response services for your shipment of radioactive material. Shippers of radioactive materials must provide a 24-hour emergency response phone number. In the event of an accident, emergency responders need to contact a person with knowledge of the shipment who may provide information such as:

  • The basic description and technical name of the hazardous material as required by the regulations;
  • Immediate hazards to health;
  • Risks of fire or explosion;
  • Immediate precautions to be taken in the event of an accident or incident;
  • Immediate methods for handling fires;
  • Initial methods for handling spills or leaks in the absence of fire; and
  • Preliminary first aid measures.

Our staff of health physicists are available to provide this information and emergency response support in the event of an accident.
